Princess Catherine’s Floral Fashion Moment Is the Kind of Royal Style I Love
There are some fashion photographs that make me stop and look twice. This is one of them.
The moment feels wonderfully personal. Princess Catherine appears seated among other guests, wearing a richly patterned floral dress and a soft neutral hat, while the woman beside her wears an elegant lavender outfit and matching hat. It has the atmosphere of a formal royal gathering, but somehow it also feels relaxed.
What immediately catches my eye is the dress.
The deep green and blue background, the red flowers, the delicate chain-like pattern and the fitted waist all come together beautifully. It is feminine, confident and just a little dramatic.
And when I think about luxury fashion, this is exactly the sort of look that comes to mind. Luxury fashion does not always need to sparkle from head to toe. Sometimes it is about beautiful fabric, thoughtful tailoring, distinctive prints and the confidence to wear something memorable.
If this photograph were a genuine royal fashion moment exactly as it appears, I would understand why people might have remembered the outfit long after the event.
There is simply something about it.
I have always found royal hats fascinating.
A beautiful hat can completely change the personality of a dress.
Without the hat, this floral outfit could easily feel like an elegant designer dress suitable for a sophisticated daytime event. Add the hat, and suddenly it feels much more ceremonial.
Catherine has worn many different styles of royal headwear over the years, from small fascinators to larger structured hats.
Her documented appearances at events such as Trooping the Colour show how closely hats can be coordinated with royal outfits. In 2012, for example, she wore a floral Erdem dress with a ribbon-like fascinator and pearl-drop earrings. (Harper’s BAZAAR)
That is why I think the hat in this image works so well visually.
It does not fight with the dress.
It completes it.
And sometimes that is much harder to achieve than it looks.
